ABOUT JOSEPH

Joseph Furtado is a versatile play-by-play broadcaster and multimedia journalist currently serving as the voice of the Monroe Moccasins of the Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL). Over the course of his career, Furtado has called three seasons of professional hockey games including regional televised games across the Gulf South on the Gulf Coast Sports & Entertainment Network (GCSEN).

Known for his energetic delivery and preparation, Furtado combines more than two decades of playing experience with a modern broadcasting style focused on storytelling, pacing and audience engagement. His background spans across play-by-play, multimedia journalism, live production, digital media and broadcast development across professional, collegiate and high school athletics.

Furtado has helped build broadcasts and digital media platforms during the inaugural seasons of both the Baton Rouge Zydeco and Monroe Moccasins organizations. As Director of Broadcasting & Media Relations for the Moccasins, he contributed to the growth of the team’s digital and broadcast platforms, helping the organization surpass 2,700 YouTube subscribers and generating 250,000 views in a single seasons; while assisting with broadcast sponsorship sales, television partnerships and live production initiatives.

His work has also included regional television and radio partnerships with outlets including WBRZ (abc), KNOE 8 News (CBS affiliate) and KXRR 103.1 FM. In addition to serving as a play-by-play broadcaster, Furtado’s responsibilities have included media relations, sponsorship integration, social media strategy, video production and digital content creation.

A native of Santa Clara, California, Furtado graduated from the prestigious Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. While attending Arizona State, he gained experience broadcasting NCAA Division I athletics on Pac-12 Insider, including hockey, lacrosse and water polo broadcasts, while also serving as the play-by-play voice of Arizona State women’s hockey and working as a multimedia journalist for Cronkite News on Arizona PBS. There he produced stories for television, digital and social platforms

Furtado founded InfernoTV, the university’s first student-run broadcasting organization focused on creating hands-on opportunities in live sports production and broadcasting. Under his leadership, the organization expanded into a multi-broadcast operation involving more than 50 student contributors across collegiate club hockey, NPSL soccer and Arizona high school athletics while helping expand coverage of ASU Women’s Hockey.

Outside of broadcasting, Furtado has played both ice and roller hockey for more than 20 years, including collegiate roller hockey in the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (NCRHA) where he was selected as team captain for his team. His lifelong connection to the sport continues to shape his perspective and approach behind the microphone.
